PITTSBURGH, PA, March 30, 2012 – Beginning in June of 2012 Foundation Radiology Group, a Pittsburgh based radiology practice serving community hospitals, will begin providing the centralized batch reading of screening mammography by its fellowship trained women’s imagers. Dedicated batch reading requires an uninterrupted block of time designated to interpret a group of screening mammograms in succession.

The advantages of centralized batch reading were originally published in a study by the American Journal of Roentgenology (AJR) and stated there is evidence showing that batched reading of screening mammograms decreases false positives and call back rates for patients thus decreasing the number of patients that have to deal with call back anxiety. The same batch reading environment studies showed that cancers may be diagnosed earlier compared to traditional reading in a non-secluded batch environment.

Tom Skelton, CEO of Foundation Radiology Group, was quoted, “This level of treatment has become a standard for care in many large urban medical centers, but has not always been available to smaller community based hospitals.” Mr. Skelton added, “We invested in the best-in-class technology to bring an unsurpassed level of care to our customers. To our knowledge, only Foundation offers this type of service exclusively to community hospitals and it delivers on our mission to revolutionize the practice of radiology in community healthcare settings.”

In order to provide centralized batch reading, Foundation made significant investments in mammography specific workstations, which include ultra-hi-res monitors designed to meet ACR guidelines and a Candelis ImageGrid™ Mammography Viewer. The Candelis solution is a web-enabled application that allows physicians to view mammography studies from any remote workstation and allows images from individual hospital sites to be routed to our fellowship trained, Women’s Imagers.

“Batch reading is the new trend for interpreting mammography,” said Dr. Saadia Khan, a fellowship trained women’s imager for Foundation. “Overall, it will create an efficient and ideal reading environment for mammograms by maintaining the current high standards of cancer detection while reducing the number of false positive recalls.” Dr. Khan added, “This will in turn decrease patient anxiety over unnecessary additional testing. The Candelis imaging module is the perfect solution for batch reading of mammograms.”
