This subspecialty focuses on interpreting imaging of the abdomen and pelvis to diagnose diseases affecting the gastrointestinal tract (hollow and solid organs), genitourinary tract (kidneys, ureters, bladder and pelvic imaging) and perform abdominal interventional radiologic procedures. Highly trained and skilled Foundation Radiology subspecialists with years of experience use radiographs, GI barium procedures, ultrasound, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), nuclear medicine, fluoroscopy, and interventional methods.
Computed Tomography (CT)
Using this diagnostic test, our board-certified team of CT specialists create detailed, cross-sectional images of internal organs, bones, soft tissue and blood vessels, viewed in multiple planes or as three-dimensional images. CT scanning with radiological expertise is effective in detecting many different cancers since the images allow a doctor to confirm the presence of a tumor and determine its size and location. Because CT is noninvasive, fast and accurate, it is especially effective in emergencies to reveal internal injuries and bleeding for quick, life-saving response.
Increased emergency department use by patients and physicians has heightened the importance of this hospital radiology specialty, which is devoted to quick and accurate diagnostic imaging of patients who suffer trauma and acute illnesses. Foundation’s use of advanced emergency radiology best practices and workflow along with our team of radiology emergency professionals have led to a greater reliance on advanced imaging techniques for acute medical decision-making in often life-saving situations, incorporating X-rays, computed tomography (CT), ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). These diagnoses must be made quickly and with certainty to ensure the correct outcome supported by a radiology staff with detailed clinical and trauma training.
Interventional Radiology (Surgical Radiology) - includes Vascular IR, Oncology IR, Neurology IR
A vascular and interventional radiology subspecialist performs minimally invasive, image-guided procedures to diagnose and treat diseases in every organ system – with less risk, less pain and less recovery time than open surgery. Foundation’s skilled team of IR specialists provide unmatched expertise and use a range of technologies including fluoroscopy, digital radiography, computed tomography (CT), sonography, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to treat vascular, gastrointestinal, hepatobiliary, genitourinary, pulmonary, musculoskeletal, and central nervous system diseases. Therapies can include angioplasty, stent placement, thrombolysis, embolization, biliary and genitourinary drainages, abscess drainages, and others.
Among the more common procedures by Interventional Radiologists are Coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA). The noninvasive method uses an injection of iodine-rich contrast material and CT scanning to examine the arteries that supply blood to the heart. This enables the Foundation IR subspecialist to evaluate conditions such as plaque buildup in arteries that cause coronary artery disease (CAD); in-stent restenosis; coronary bypass graft patency; suspected abnormal anatomy of the coronary arteries; and heart failure.
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
MRI uses a powerful magnetic field, radio waves and a computer to produce detailed pictures of the inside of your body. It does not involve X-rays. MRI is used by Foundation Radiologists who maximize this technology’s capabilities to help diagnose, evaluate or monitor treatment for a wide variety of conditions throughout the body including chest, abdomen, pelvis, bones and joints. MRI also is an effective investigative tool for cancers and cardiac conditions.
A wide variety of modalities – including conventional X-ray, computed tomography (CT), ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) – to diagnose disorders of the bones, joints and associated soft tissues. Our fellowship-trained musculoskeletal radiologists are experts in how human bones, muscles and ligaments work together and specialize in all areas of musculoskeletal/orthopedics including arthritis, infection, metabolic disease, trauma, tumors, sports medicine, joint replacements, and congenital abnormalities.
Foundation subspecialists in neuroradiology possess extensive knowledge and years of experience in diagnosing and identifying abnormalities and diseases of the central and peripheral nervous system – the brain and spinal cord, skull, spine, and head and neck. Neuroradiology uses a range of modalities including X-ray, computer assisted tomography (CT), magnetic resonance tomography (MRT), angiography and others for high-resolution and functional imaging and intervention. Many conditions such as stroke or aneurysms require quick and accurate subspecialist interpretations to initiate potentially life-saving treatments.
This subspecialty, available from board-qualified Foundation Radiologists, in medical imaging uses small amounts of radioactive material to diagnose and determine the severity of or treat a variety of diseases, including many types of cancers, heart disease, gastrointestinal, endocrine, neurological disorders and other abnormalities within the body. Examples of diseases treated with nuclear medicine procedures are hyperthyroidism, thyroid cancer, lymphomas, and bone pain from some types of cancer.
Foundation’s pediatric radiology subspecialists provide unparalleled talent and ability in the diagnosis of illnesses, injuries, and diseases of infants, children and adolescents – selecting the best imaging techniques and technologies suitable for smaller, lighter bodies and considering the dynamics of a growing body: X-ray, ultrasound, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and nuclear medicine. Specialists provide support and advice in all ALARA (as low as reasonably achievable) initiatives, and pediatric-specific imaging procedures such as VCU, hip Ultrasounds, pyloric stenosis studies, bone age, scoliosis readings, pediatric DEXA and pediatric neuroradiology advice. Additionally, this radiology specialty includes innovative initiatives and educational opportunities for pediatric clinical colleagues to ensure they share the hospital’s commitment to supporting the care of children in their community.
Positron Emission Tomography (PET)
A PET scan is a nuclear medicine test that shows how your tissues and organs are functioning and to measure changes in the body that are associated with diseases. A radiopharmaceutical is injected or swallowed and accumulates in areas of the body that have higher levels of chemical activity, indicating areas of disease. Another similar imaging technique is single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT). They are often combined with CT, which gives subspecialty radiologists information about both the structure and function of cells and tissues.
Foundation’s PET specialists utilize extensive training, years of experience and unmatched knowledge to identify metabolic or body process changes to locate lesions in the body; determine malignant from benign tissue; show presence or spread of malignant tumors; determine extent of disease; and evaluate if a tumor is responding to treatment. PET-CT is considered highly accurate detecting and evaluating several types of cancers, heart disease and brain disorders.
Our highly-qualified team of ultrasound radiologists use sonography to noninvasively evaluate symptoms and map internal organs for a wide range of conditions and diseases, particularly in the abdomen, vascular system, reproductive organs, brain and eyes. Ultrasound specialists diagnose a wide range of issues, such as causes of pain, swelling and infection in internal organs; heart conditions and damage after a heart attack; tumors. They also examine a developing fetus in pregnant women and the brain and hips in infants and use ultrasound to help guide biopsies.
Foundation’s Thoracic Radiology subspecialists are experts with various technologies – chest radiography, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), CT angiography of the aorta and pulmonary arteries, ultrasound and percutaneous intervention – in diagnosing cardiopulmonary diseases, or conditions affecting the lungs and surrounding tissues. These include lung cancer, airway diseases such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), interstitial lung disease, infection, and vascular diseases of the aorta and pulmonary arteries.
Women's Imaging/Breast Imaging
This subspecialty is an area of expertise for the Foundation team and includes various imaging modalities to deliver screening, diagnostics and intervention for breast and gynecologic conditions and diseases, and obstetrics. A range of services include digital mammography; 3D Tomography breast ultrasound with elastography; breast MRI; breast biopsies under x-ray, ultrasound and MRI guidance; bone densitometry; pelvic ultrasound and MRI; hysterosalpinogram (HSG) exam of the uterus and fallopian tubes; fetal MRI and ultrasound; and interventional procedures.
